Bettie was born in Melrose, MA to Fred and Grace Smith in 1924. She began school in Massachusetts and graduated high school in Montclair, N.J. where they moved when she was 10 years old. After high school Bettie completed a secretarial course at the Catherine Gibbs School in Montclair.
Bettie was working as a bookkeeper and dance instructor at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Montclair in 1946 where she met Frank Overholt. She and Frank were married later that year and re-located to South Miami, Florida where they founded a successful retail business in that city. Bettie was the bookkeeper.
Bettie was for many years an active member and treasurer of the Coco Plum Women’s Club of South Miami.
An avid reader throughout her life she read nearly every issue of The New Yorker magazine which was founded the year she was born.
Frank and Bettie were very happily married for 70 years until Frank’s death at 98 in 2016.
She will be missed by her daughter, Elizabeth, son-in-law, Jim, and grandson, Murphy, and loving family member in New York, Miami, and North Carolina.

Frank Overholt
January 30, 1918 ~ January 23, 2016
Frank Overholt was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1918.
He was educated in the Omaha Public Schools and enrolled in Creighton University where he spent one year before joining the U.S. Army in 1939. He was eventually accepted into Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in 1941.
In 1943 he was sent to Europe and fought in France from 1943 to 1944. During that service he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals.
He was sent to an army facility in New Jersey to recuperate from a serious injury he received in France. While in New Jersey he met and married Bettie Smith in Montclair, New Jersey. They eventually settled in South Miami, Florida, where they opened and operated a retail business for many years.
Frank died in January of 2016. He was survived by his wife of 70 years, Bettie, a daughter, Elizabeth, and son-in-law, Jim.
THEIR ASHES WILL BE SCATTERED AT SEA.
